Ken is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in private practice as a psychotherapist in the state of Virginia. His experience involves work in a variety of clinical settings including residential treatment, inpatient psychiatry, child welfare, community mental health, and the University of Virginia Medical Center. He has worked with adults, couples, families, and youth. Ken believes all people hold the capacity for growth and that a holistic understanding of the self, the mind, and one's environment is essential to achieving lasting change. He has completed the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course for healthcare professionals through The Mindfulness Center at UVA and his approach to therapy is influenced by evidence-based mindfulness practices being validated by modern neuroscience. Ken's work is also informed by his regular yoga and meditation practice, as well as workshops, trainings, and retreats he has completed with respected teachers including Jack Kornfield, Dan Siegel, Sharon Salzberg, Mark Epstein, Dharma Mittra, and Jon Kabat-Zinn.
Drawing from his diverse clinical background, Ken's approach is rooted in psychodynamic therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, humanistic psychology, and family systems work. His overall framework is one of mindfulness, and his style is down-to-earth, client-centered, and solution-focused. Ken believes there are times when people can benefit from therapy for specific reasons and is commited to providing a confidential space where clients can share and process their difficulties. With non-judgment, he helps clients become more conscious and aware of the internal process tied to their thoughts, feelings, and emotions. This helps people begin to break down the complexities of life into manageable pieces that can be addressed with clarity. Ken supports people to better understand their early conditioning as it relates to the present, reevaluate dissatisfying patterns, and become more aware of everyday attachments that may inform their suffering. This helps clients begin to better recognize the choices they have, trust their natural wisdom, and open to a way of being and interacting that is more grounded, functional, and rewarding.
Ken lives with his wife and son just outside of Charlottesville in Albemarle County, Virginia. He is also an artist: www.hornestudio.com
